A sty, or as some like to call it stye, is a warm and painful bump that is found on the base or tip of an eyelash or even sometimes inside the eyelid. This condition is usually called a hordeolum in medical terms. A sty is created by an infection of oil glands that are found on the eyelid, which are called meibomian glands. These glands have the sole responsibility to lubricate the eyeball by using a fluid called sebum. This fluid is released from the small openings that are located on the edge of the eyelid. Such an infection is caused when these glands are become clogged up. An infected hair tissues or connective glands, found on the eyelash area, can also cause it. The bacterium that is created by such an infection is called staphylococcus aureus, which makes up about 90 to 90% of the cases that are related to styes. A sty can be problematic in the way that it can inflame the eyelid, causing some small-time swelling and pain.

There is a term that goes by “external hordeolum”. This term refers to a sty that comes into existence at the base of the eyelid, where you would find the hair’s follicle. Theinternal hordeolum refers to a sty that is created by an inflamed meibomian gland, found under the eyelid. These two types to sty can occur on a human’s eye. However, there is a common misconception of such a condition. Some people tend to confuse a chalazion and a sty. A chalazion is a specific type of scar thatis caused by inflammation due to some chronic related problems, but these are not painful unlike the sty and are bigger in size.

Let us now take a look into some common symptoms and signs of this eye infection. The very first sign of having a sty is considered to be the appearance of a red area near your eyelid. The red area feeling tender and the person experiencing some pain in the area that has been affected then follow this up. Once affected, the eye tends to feel some irritation and you feel like scratching the area. But be aware, scratching it may cause the infection to leak out some fluid which will cause some infections in any area that it touches. When the initial stages are dealt with, the victim of the infection experiences some swelling in the core of the sty, while also feeling some discomfort when you blink. Also associated with a sty is your eye getting watery and reacting sensitively to light. The common giveaway for a sty is the fact that it’s small in size and yellow in color. A yellow-colored spot appears at the core of the bump, which is actually a depiction of pus being pushed out to the surface.

This portion of the article will give an in-depth understanding of who is the most probably of being affected by such an infection. The thing here is that styes are a very common thing. Age is not something that really matters when you talk about whether or not you can be hit by this infection. A sty can strike people of any age, and neither does the gender of a person have to do with you developing a sty. Both, men and women, are equally hit by this eye infection. However, there is the fact that people, who already have some particular chronic diseases like diabetes, are more open to getting this infection as compared to the rest of the population. In most people, styes are created mainly due to stress. Research has proven that people who have a high level of blood fat are more vulnerable to suffer from a blockage in their oil glands and glands located on their eyelid, which eventually leads to the development of a sty.

A sty can be treated in quite a several ways. Some people suggest applying a warm cloth to the area that has been affected for about duration of 10 minutes. This should be repeated about four to six times in one day. This particular treatment is considered to be convenient to do at your own house too. It is effective immediately and the speed of it will help to aid in bringing relief to each of the symptoms. Some people often think that squeezing the pus out or pressing will help it heal since it will no longer contain any content inside. This is a bad idea. Neither of these two things should be done to it as a means of draining the infection out because this can lead to either the infection spreading to different areas or simply worsening the condition of the infection. If you head over to your doctor, he will probably drain the infection himself if it stays for a more than a few days that is, by suing local anesthesia. He will also probably prescribe you to use some ointments to place on the sty or take some antibiotics. Pain medicines can be used to reduce the pain if it gets out of hand. When you are in such a condition, it is best for you to avoid wearing any sort of eye makeup or even wearing contact lenses.

Complications that may arise from a sty are usually seen once in a blue moon. There is the risk of the infection to spread to the other eye, leading to numerous styes. The most common complication that may be caused by a sty is a chalazion. Chalazion is known as a type of scarring of eyeglands, which may even cause cysts. A chalazion may be big enough to deform the eye’s cornea and cause a disturbance with your vision. There are also some other problems that may arise like the sty not being drained properly. This then leads to deformed eyelashes, possibly even disrupting the growth of them.
